My name is Wendy Miller, and this is my story. I have lived and worked in various areas of Belize, including Punta Gorda, Placencia and Hopkins Villages in Belize. And my journey here was long in coming. And I think it’s an interesting story too.
Years ago I had read a book, somewhere around 1981 or 1982 (yes, I’ve read books since then, too, lol) about a couple from San Francisco who moved to a place called Truk Island, which is out in the middle of nowhere in the Pacific Ocean, Micronesia I think. I’ve since learned that this was a group of islands and the name has been changed to Chuuk. The book was their story and while reading it I fell in love with the concept of moving someplace tropical. I didn’t want to go as far off-grid as that couple did but I knew that someplace warm was in my future. And I had told my parents that I thought I was born in the wrong part of the world (Canada). I hate the cold, so need I say more?
After several years of working and raising my family I finally had my opportunity to realize my goal of moving someplace tropical. My career path led me, very indirectly, into real estate. Over my professional career I had a fascination with real estate, buying and selling, renovating, and doing property management so when I had the opportunity to change careers into real estate in Canada I chose it. And it was this career change that opened the door for me to come to Belize. Over the course of the years my husband and I were discussing how we were going to support ourselves when we got here. We were both in the Information Technology field but the market here in Belize for our particular skill set is very, very small so the only rational thing we could do was look for a different career path. Real estate was it. The transition wasn’t that direct though, and it really was just a matter of circumstance that my new career path in Ontario would lead us here.
I trained to become an agent in Ontario and started my real estate career there. I had decided to get out of Information Technology and chose to follow the real estate path instead. And that is what opened the opportunity for me here. I was approached by an existing Belize realtor with an offer to come here and work. And of course, I jumped on it. Within a month and a half I had made the decision and I was here. That was 2012, end of January. And I’ve been pursuing the practice of real estate in Belize since then.
Sometimes it’s tough being away from family and friends. But mostly I’m thankful that I have this opportunity and that I can take advantage of it.
My Professional Objective
My goal is to be your go-to person from the moment you decide to start looking at alternative places to live to the moment you move into your new home. I assist my clients with services like property tax payments, surveys, utility changeovers, finding contractors, working with the builders as feet on the street. I can also put you in touch with property management firms as this isn’t something I do myself.
My client services include extensive photo and videos of the property, including drone and neighbourhood visuals, even after you have physically inspected the property. My belief is that the more and better informed you are the better decision you can make.
I believe that the decision to purchase property will be one of the toughest decisions, and yet one of the most exhilarating decisions you will make and you want it to be right. This is why I suggest that buyers work with one agent, a buyer’s agent. And being a buyer’s agent is the focus of my real estate career in Belize. Finding that one person that you can go to for your questions is important. It saves time. It saves confusion (there are an awful lot of so-called experts out there just because they did it once). My job is to get you whatever information you are looking for – 1-stop shopping. And when you make that purchase and are happy then so am I.
