Life in Placencia

Placencia, one of Belize’s most popular destinations. Placencia is a charming fishing village set at the southern end of the Placencia Peninsula in southeast Belize. The peninsula is 19 miles long and only half a mile wide, bordered on one side by the stunning Caribbean Sea and on the other by the serene mango fringed Placencia Lagoon.

Placencia Village at the very tip of the peninsula is where most of the action happens. One of Placencia’s busiest areas is the Sidewalk, a narrow pathway running along the beachside. Along the Sidewalk is where you’ll find the majority of bars, restaurants, shops and arts and crafts galleries. It is also the home of 2 Placencia institutions, Barefoot Beach Bar and Tipsy Tuna Sports Bar, favorites amongst locals, expats and tourists. One of the charms of Placencia Village is the proximity of everything. Most people get around by bicycle or golf cart, in reality though pretty much everything can be reached by foot!

At the end of the peninsula is the Placencia Municipal Pier. From here you can embark on all sorts of water based trips and excursions. Take a boat out and take advantage of some of the best fishing in the country, you can take a shorter trip close to shore and catch your lunch or you can go way out beyond the reef for incredible game fishing to catch (and release!) one of ‘the big 3’ Bonefish, Tarpon and Permit! Boats can also take you out for incredible scuba diving trips so you can see the incredible conservation work being done on our incredible reefs. Don’t want to get too wet? Take the short boat ride down to Monkey River Village. You’ll see manatees on your way there and then as you enter the river you’ll truly be in the jungle, surrounded by howler monkeys and other incredible wildlife.

To the north of Placencia we journey up the peninsula first to Seine Bight, a small fishing village inhabited mainly by the Garifuna people. The Garifuna people are a mixed African and indigenous people originally from the Caribbean island of Saint Vincent who speak Garifuna, an Arawakan language. Seine Bight is a lively village where you’ll hear traditional drumming and singing coming from many of the hole-in-the wall bars and restaurants serving up medleys of traditional seafood dishes. Don’t miss out on ‘bitters’ or ‘bittas’ as it’s know here, the national drink of the Garifuna people, an alcoholic medicinal beverage said to be a cure all for anything that might be ailing you.

Next up the Peninsula is Maya Beach. This relaxed section of the peninsula is favoured by expats and features some of the best restaurants in the area. Famous eateries include Maya Beach Bistro, a hot spot for gastronomic delights, famous for the best breakfast on the Placencia Peninsula, Tapas Happy Hour every afternoon and romantic beachfront dinners. You’ll also find the famous Mr Q’s at Mangos, the best BBQ on peninsula as well as the best happy hour!

Maya Beach is also well known for having the only bowling alley in Belize! Also just 12 minutes away from Riversdale, head down to Jaguar Lanes for fun nights of bowling, wings and Belikin beers, the national beer of Belize. Join the locals for weekly poker nights, sign up for the bowling league or just enjoy their big screen TVs which always have the latest game playing.

Let’s now take a journey north of the Placencia Peninsula! Heading up north we leave the peninsula and head inland. Only 15 minutes away we reach the famous Cockscomb Basin Forest Reserve. Nearly 100,000 acres of protected forest on the slopes of the Maya Mountains is yours to explore. This is the land of the elusive jaguar so keep your eyes peeled. The expertise of the local guides will help you spot his tracks and if you’re lucky, you may even spot him among the tropical rainforest. Here you can also take the opportunity to interact with Mayan community where they’ll guide you through traditional chocolate making techniques; you’ll even get the opportunity to make and taste your own! Finish the day with a hearty Mayan meal before heading back home.
