Placencia vs Hopkins – How to choose between them for your trip to Belize!

Remaxvipbelize : Bare Foot Bar
It is so hard to choose cities to visit in a country you have never been to, and you just can’t get a real sense of a city until you visit yourself. I had driven through Hopkins a few times before and we decided to stay for a long weekend to get a better sense of what it is like, as we get many questions about the differences between Placencia and Hopkins.

General comparisons

In general, you will read that Hopkins is a “sleepier” village, more rustic, and perhaps tourist wise, a bit behind Placencia. Some travelers choose Belize because they want to have an authentic experience, and do not want to feel like they just went to another all inclusive resort. I believe the average tourist will not feel that either place is TOO touristy–I mean really, it is very hard to find a place that has NO traveler comforts unless you are going wayyyy off the beaten path. Both if you are looking for a lot of warm interactions with locals, where the experience IS the village, there are no chains, plenty of local excursions and restaurants, but it is still safe, manageable, and you can get by with English, then you are headed to the right places. I added in a few pretty pictures of Hopkins to enjoy 🙂 So, the comparison….

Hopkins

Hopkins has an interesting divide. After you drive the road in, if you go left, you head into a very authentic Central American village. You will see a few tourists riding bikes, but for the most part, you have all local owned businesses, a lot of very simple and rustic shack restaurants, parts of it look a bit rough, but you can safely navigate it. The roads are dirt and moderately hard to bike in places. The ride in is quite bumpy.

If you go right, you will see a bunch of signs that look pretty touristy–and you will quickly enter into a town where it is all tourists. However, this is a seriously cute little town, we were told it is called Hollywood Boulevard :). There are a bunch of really cute resorts on the beach–Jaguar Reef, Belizean Dreams, Hamanasi, Almond Beach. Any of these will make a traveler happy. Very first world. We stayed at Jaguar Reef – they had a nice clean beach, free bikes and kayaks, good restaurant on site, and a fun pool bar. I also realllllllly appreciated that the resorts banded together to keep the beach clean….in Placencia, we rake our beach, but many parts of the beach aren’t touched too often. This is annoying and aesthetically unpleasing when the seaweed comes in.

Cute beach signs
Remax Vip Belize: Cute beach signs

Closer to Excursions

One huge plus of Hopkins is that you are closer to the excursions. You are saving about 45 minutes of a drive to most of the inland excursions. If you are looking for a first world resort where you can easily hit the inland excursions, it might be the right choice for you.

View from Chef Rob’s
Remax Vip Belize: View from Chef Rob's

Authentic Experience?

I would say that for MOST people–if they stayed IN town (taking a left) they might feel it was a bit rough looking with not a huge amount of village activities to do. So you get a more authentic experience on that side but you need to be ready for a town that is not geared for the average tourist. The “Hollywood” side of town – great restaurants including Barracuda’s, Chef Rob’s, and a cute shopping center that I’d kill for sometimes in Placencia. There was a very fun bar called Loggerheads that I recommend. BUT overall on that end of town, you might feel like you had a more tourist-contrived experience. The prices were all in American dollars which tells you a lot right there 🙂

Not a bad view for breakfast
Remax Vip Belize: Not a bad view for breakfast

Cons of Hopkins

The water was a bit muddier than Placencia and the bugs got me bad in Hopkins–but this is entirely unfair to say this is the norm, as it really just depends on luck sometimes. A consideration is that while Placencia has an airport a couple minutes from town, you have to fly into Dangriga and get a ride from there, which can be 20+ minutes, and there may be a charge for that, with a bumpy drive in. I am trying very hard not to be biased here….but Placencia is just a perfect mix of authentic and what you see on a Caribbean postcard. Everything is is one place (not separate sides of town for tourists). The village experience IS the experience here. There are too many good places to eat to name, and while we don’t have a super polished resort area in town, we have adorable guest houses and a unique Caribbean looking village that just works. While you are farther from the excursions, it makes up for it by the village experience you can have (just head out for an afternoon turned evening here and you will see what that means!!) And, you can drink the water in Placencia.

Overall, Hopkins has a more polished (tiny) resort village on one end/more authentic Central American village on the other end–where Placencia is a perfect mix of the two. Hopkins is closer to excursions; however, with that, there is more to do and experience in the village of Placencia. I’d say you may want to stop in Hopkins and do the excursions, then check out Placencia for a few days to have the village experience! 🙂

Southwest Airlines Begins Daily Flights to Belize From Houston !

Remax Vip Belize : Southwest Airlines Begins Daily Flights to Belize From Houston

As of October 15th 2015, daily flights between Houston and Belize City as well as six other destinations will begin. After receiving U.S. government approval of the new service, Southwest has begun selling these flights at Southwest.com, offering Customers nonstop options between Houston (Hobby) and four destinations in Mexico—Cancun, Mexico City, Puerto Vallarta, and San Jose del Cabo/Los Cabos—as well as flights to San Jose, Costa Rica, and Belize City, Belize.

Remax Vip Belize: Belize City, Belize

“We’re building our first-ever international terminal project to give Houstonians, visitors to Houston, and our connecting Customers exceptional value and legendary Customer Service in international markets for which there is great demand.” — Gary Kelly, Southwest Airlines Chairman, President, and CEO.

Belize as well as the other new flight destination countries are expected to benefit from what’s called the “Southwest Effect“, where there is an average decrease in airfares of as much as 30 percent wherever Southwest goes. US Ambassador Carlos R. Moreno said Southwest Airline’s arrival is what you call a “win-win”. The airline has access to one of the fastest growing tourism destinations in the hemisphere and passengers benefit from low fares.

Award winning Placencia!, Tutti Frutti and Tranquilo are back open, Tiger Falls, Yoga and updates from the end of slow season in Placencia…

Remax Vip Belize : Award winning Placencia

Placencia is extremely proud today–for the first time ever, PLACENCIA was chosen as the TOP BEACH DESTINATION of 2015, as voted by a large number of countries, at World Travel Awards!! Here is more details on the award….we were up against some stiff competition!https://www.worldtravelawards.com/award-mexico-and-central-americas-leading-beach-destination-2015

Let’s just take a moment to explore a few  reasons Placencia is awesome. Our beach has been picture perfect for weeks now, the weather has been spectacular, and Tutti Frutti opened back up today! Tranquilo also reopens this week! Here are a few pics from the last week or so, it has been amazingly beautiful.

The whole village is getting ready for high season. There is so much construction and updating going on, and we have been doing our share here at Caribbean Beach Cabanas. We took a little time off of having guests to do some updates, and here are the latest pictures of the upgrades we have made!

On a different note, another option when you come here that I wanted to plug is BB Yoga Flow. I love yoga, and going to a class is always better (for me anyway). I had heard about Agnes, and started attending her classes a couple weeks ago. The people in the class are awesome, Agnes is a GREAT teacher, and I love her little studio. From CBC, it is a short bike ride, just past Turtle Inn. Her classes are at 6 and 9am, and you can find both advanced and beginner classes. Here are a couple images I took–this is highly recommended when you come, she’ll make you never want to leave!

Another awesome recent find I want to share….we get a lot of athletic people here who want to do active things (note, on vacation I usually want to lay on the beach and be lazy. But, if you are the type who likes to hike and be active, listen up!) Dave and I drove to Cockscomb this past week and did the Tiger Falls hike. This was SO awesome. You’ll want to bring a small backpack with water, your bathing suit, a towel, and a change of clothes and shoes. You will hike about 4 miles to a FANTASTIC TOTALLY WORTH IT 2 waterfalls, where even with my fears of spiders and snakes, I jumped in and swam. It was just amazing and a must do for hikers. You will also see a breathtaking view of Victoria’s Peak, check out these pictures! Note–this hike was, for me, grueling. I was exhausted afterwards but also had that nice natural high. It was a lot of uphill hiking! You can really earn your drinks later in the day. I am not the only one who loved it….

3 Tips for Guests & Best coffee options!

Remax Vip Belize : Free/fun stuff to get before
Based on some recent guest feedback, I am throwing out there three tips that are totally unrelated, but may improve your trip 🙂
Remax Vip Belize: Vacation Time

1.) Before you get here, while you are planning your fun, I just found out something interesting this week. BTB–Belize Tourism Board, which is the board who asks for your passport info, and who makes the magazines you see, and promotes tourism here, collects money with each hotel guest. Part of what they give back, is a FREE service to incoming guests…..they will send you a bunch of information to your home for FREE if you sign up here:

https://www.travelbelize.org/request-brochure

And, you can actually FOR FREE call them and ask them any questions you want (and enjoy the charming Belize accent!)…the only caveat is you get 10 minutes per call and then you have to call back 🙂 But, this is a really nice service if you have some exotic questions that you can’t find answers to! Here is the FREE number!

Toll free info–from the US–1-800-624-0686

These are the guys that came up with the cute logo for the country!

Remax Vip Belize: Belize

2.) I will try to be as nice as I can for #2 :)…..Guatemala is known for their coffee, right? I am not sure if this is something Belize is really known for. What I know is, there is coffee bags available at all the stores. I have tried all.of.them. Some are really expensive and some are cheap, but this has little to do with the taste. BIG TIP here…..I am noticing a lot of guests buy the Belize coffee in the green bag, and then leave almost the whole bag in their cabana when they leave.

Remax Vip Belize: 04 well you Know me.

I decided to do a PSA and announce that no one should buy coffee unless they are SURE that is is sealed properly in the bag, like never opened. I notice that some of the stores stock Belize coffee that was ground, then put back in the bag, but by the time it gets in the consumers hands, it is often…..quite sour (ie: gross.) I notice at Wallen’s you can grind your own right there, this works! Otherwise, here is my suggestion, as someone who has tried them all…..one of the cheaper varieties available here looks like this:

Remax Vip Belize: Leon

That is BZ price, so it is about $5.50 US for this bag. It is IMHO the best tasting coffee and also one of the cheapest. You can also get fresh ground at Above Grounds or Brewed Awakenings. But nothing makes me sadder than thinking a guest will experience this… “BELIZE COFFEE YES!! I AM GOING TO ENJOY THIS ON MY VERANDA! Waaaaait a minute,….this coffee is totally gross and has now ruined my false memory of what the morning would be….” you get the picture. So, buy from Wallen’s and grind yourself, or buy the blue bag anywhere (it’s always sealed!) or buy from the coffee shops. 🙂

3.) We are not out of the woods on this Sargassum thing yet. I am so sick of this seaweed that when I see it rolling in I can’t get my eyes to stop unrolling. It is NOT THAT BAD since last winter, but it IS bad enough that the shores haven’t been totally clear in a while, and just enough of it rolls in that we have had to deal with raking it every morning. We feel terrible when guests come, ready to jump in the Caribbean, and have to dodge seaweed. (It is not just here, it is everywhere, and people are working on this issue.) Please note our back up plan if you are dying to get in the water….

Here are Some Open-to-Everyone Pools, Bars, and Daytime Fun!!

—Fusion Beach is a wonderful, Miami-beach style pool and bar, open to the public, just a short walk north on the beach. (walk to the beach and turn left, you will run into it!)

Remax Vip Belize: Miami-beach

—Tranquilo is a bar on Placencia Caye, known as the place to be to watch sunsets! You can float around on rafts with cupholders there. If you want to go, walk to the pier and call Jeff at 620 7763, tell him you are at the pier and want a pick up. The boat “3 Things” will take you on a 2 minute boat ride to the bar. Free sunset shots too! It is the opposite side of the island so no seaweed.

Remax Vip Belize: Tranquilo bar
–Belize Ocean Club, about 25 minutes north on the peninsula, offers shuttles throughout the day to their resort, where you can kayak, paddleboard, play volleyball, or use their great pool. Sometimes the seaweed will be worse one place vs. the other, so this is an option for a day when it gets too bad here. Free Daily Shuttles from Placencia to Belize Ocean Club depart from Belize Ocean Club’s village office (between Mojo and office supply) at 10.30, 2.30, 7.30 and 9.30.
Remax Vip Belize: Belize Ocean Club
–Taking excursions out to Silk or Ranguana Cayes is another great idea to see what the shores are really supposed to be like!! You can schedule these throughout the village at any of the tour booths.
Remax Vip Belize: Ranguana Cayes

Mather Nature at times can try to ruin a good time, but we can still make the best of it!!

Again let me emphasize that don’t panic if you are on your way here, it has been at manageable levels, but aesthetically, it could be better :-/. Here is a picture from Ambergris Caye, from San Pedro Scoop’s blog, but it is a perfect example of how most of the shores have been looking–

Lobsterfest 2015….What if it rains on my trip?……..Beach art ideas!

Remax Vip Belize : Cave tubing
Lobsterfest 2015 was a great success again! The only negative was that it was really windy, so the duck race was cancelled, but everyone had a great time. The supposed “rainy” season hasn’t been so rainy, only a few showers here and there, mostly at night. It was REALLY hot here about 2 weeks ago, but this past week has been perfect–enough cloud cover to keep the temps down, a nice breeze, and not such oppressive heat 🙂 Here are a few pictures from Lobsterfest:

Many people ask about rainy season, and you will find you get a lot of different answers. Basically, it rains MORE than dry season, but usually at night, so besides waking up to a wet ground or puddles, you don’t know it is rainy season :). The tropics are so unpredictable; you can have several days in a row of rain in dry season, which happens from time to time, and long stretches of dry in the rainy season.

Terrible thing to see on your beach vacation, courtesy of google.

Remax Vip Belize: Beach vacation

It is a huge disappointment to come here and have it rain for many days in a row, but this doesn’t necessarily happen at any certain point of the year. With the constantly changing El Nino, it can be impossible to predict weather patterns and changes for people trying to find the best time to come. Basically, your chances of coming and having your trip ruined by rain are SMALL, statistically, but if it does happen, the best advice is make the best of it. :-/ (no one likes hearing that, including me!) BUT, here are some rainy day activities that have proved fun for people:

-Plan your inland excursions–spend more time than you thought at excursions you might not do if it were great weather (ATM Cave tour, Cave tubing, Xunantunich, Ian Anderson’s, the zoo). You might get cheated by not doing Monkey River, Cockscomb, or snorkeling, but the excursions are still totally awesome, just not the local ones (and you have an excuse to come back!). Also, the local excursions will still go out, just bring shoes you don’t mind getting muddy and a poncho (yeah look like a tourist!!) and you can still have a great time.

-There are still plenty of restaurants you can enjoy indoors–Dolce Vita, Mojo’s, Wendy’s, Robert’s Grove, etc are great places where you will stay dry.

-There is a new indoor “mall” going in, in the heart of the village. While there is no definite establishments announced yet, word is that there will be plenty of indoor shopping, a gym, and movies to do some indoor fun. You can also go bowling indoors at Jaguar Lanes!

Google image of the new mall going on…..it’s not done fyi in case you were concerned.

-Make sure you book where you have wifi/cable/books/games, (ahem, we have all these, just sayin’!) so you can enjoy some lazy days inside! These are underrated in my opinion 🙂

This takes care of several days here, and you could still say you had an awesome trip!!

BUT let’s forget about rain…it has been great weather here, and we have been putting up a lot of cheerful beach art, which is always fun to look at when you are getting excited about your trip!

What’s new at Caribbean Beach Cabanas in Placencia!!

Remax Vip Belize : New at Caribbean Beach Cabanas in Placencia
The long break in blogs is due to friends’ visits, weddings, being BUSY here, and I have been in the US for a lot of the last couple months, leaving my husband Dave in paradise to work :). Thanks to his efforts, there have been a lot of great changes to our place, and many of them are going to be very exciting for upcoming guests!!One of the great changes….we just upgraded our wifi so that it is STRONG!! you will be able to get a strong signal throughout and even out past our property now–even in the water (not recommended :))! This is quite a feat in Belize, where you have to ship in everything you need 🙂 Dave was “excited” to learn all that programming 🙂

Remax Vip Belize: Quite a feat in Belize

We also have two brand new bikes for guests to use! Two of them are old fashioned beach cruisers that have baskets for groceries, and the other two are great for longer journeys up the peninsula.

Remax Vip Belize: New bikes

We purchased two huge inner tubes for using in the water…the type that you generally see on excursions. They allow you to really sit up and float in the sea (for those like me, who are a bit wary of creatures!)

Remax Vip Belize: Inner tubes

I have been working on a ton of new art, and Dave built a large new welcome wall as guests enter the property. We are going to work hard to recycle bottles and make art out of them!

More homemade art that is excited to be hung around CBC…

Thanks to Keith and Lacey’s wedding, we now have an arch to incorporate into the entrance….

We have redone our signs, both at the entrance to the main street and at the sidewalk….

Sign at the sidewalk….

We also LOVE the wood carvings that the locals make, so we will be adding a whole new family of animals to the landscaping! Including a lizard that I love!!

“We can’t wait to live at CBC! We are excited to be put in our final places :)”
Remax Vip Belize: Wood carvings

There will be even more improvements as we move forward…..we are so excited to make Caribbean Beach Cabanas the first micro resort that is walking distance to the village!!

The water has been GREAT…although rainy season is upon us :). Rainy season consists of night showers, short bursts, awesome skies, fun thunder at times….and a bit more muggy. Here are some recent totally undoctored pictures of the sea!!

AND……

The biggest change is that we are working on a large new unit in the back of the property! The walls are up and it is starting to look like a house! Our guests during this transition have been wonderful. We hope they all return to see the final product! The outside of the house will be done in July but the inside will take a bit longer of course. Why go outside the US for a beach vacation???

Remax Vip Belize: Outside the US for a beach vacation
I am currently in the area of St Pete/Clearwater, Florida, to visit with family and friends, and it has made me think–is it worth going outside the US for a beach vacation?? I will try to put together an unbiased list of what seem to be the pros and cons of each, to help you decide if it is worth it for YOU!What is awesome about staying in the US for your vacation? (Note, some are really obvious:) ) Please enjoy the recent pics I have been taking of the Florida beaches as you read 🙂 (and some stolen from google to enhance certain opinions :))

–You don’t need a passport of course!

–You can generally get to your place in a couple hours at most, more cheaply than flying internationally.

But you might sit in traffic more.
Remax Vip Belize: You might sit in traffic more

–You kind of know what to expect….less stress in packing and planning. You KNOW you are going to see the Wings store, a Margaritaville type restaurant, mini golf, movie theaters, chain restaurants, CVS, etc.

Exotic McDonalds.
Remax Vip Belize: Exotic McDonalds.

–You can pretty much count on knowing that the place you stay will be up to first world expectations.

Probably has hand rails. And rules about not feeding the birds.
Remax Vip Belize: Not feeding the birds

–You can be pretty assured that you will be comfortable and have everything you need in a short distance, including emergency services.

–You can probably do it pretty cheaply and know that that 2 star hotel will probably be ok 🙂

Remax Vip Belize: 2 Star Hotel

–It is not as hard to find traveling mates as it is just not that much of a commitment.

Not a secluded beach.
Remax Vip Belize: Not a secluded beach

–Beach vacations in the US are pretty clean, well organized, and are so used to having tourists that you can feel pretty safe and secure about your experience whether you are going to Myrtle Beach.Hilton Head, etc.

Remax Vip Belize: Myrtle Beach.Hilton
Remax Vip Belize: Myrtle Beach.Hilton

–No major planning ahead of time, you can pretty much picture the whole trip before it happens (if you have had even one beach vacation, you get it. You know what they look and feel like.)

Remax Vip Belize: Beach Vacation

–No dealing with customs or that long trip, long lines, being uncomfortable at times, that scary feeling when you show up at an international airport and don’t know what the hell to do next, having to learn a new way of doing things, feeling rigid and or dumb the first time you do anything 🙂

Ooooook. SO given all that comfort, familiarity, low stress, why go somewhere else???

Note–sometimes the trip I described above is exactly what we are looking for. Not every vacation needs to be an exotic, crazy experience. But, here is what I have learned about why it is TOTALLY WORTH it to push yourself a little! (also note, I am using a beach vacation in Placencia as my comparative place 🙂 )

–Let’s start with something shallow. You can drink on the beach! No one cares! In fact it is encouraged! You can drive in the back of a pick up truck while drinking! You can walk to the village with a beer from your house in your hand! This is just FUN and feels like you are really doing something somewhere fun.

Remax Vip Belize: Beach vacation in Placencia

–Along with that freedom….getting a sense of different culture is invaluable–even with less restrictions and rules, you realize that everyone is still alive. You are likely to see parents with their kids on the handlebars of their bike, kids running in the streets, small children selling things…and yet, you see happy smiling people who are doing just fine. You may have a realization that it is damn exhilarating to jump off the top of the booze cruise you are on, or not wear your seat belt, or think FOR YOURSELF about what level of risk you want to take.

Remax Vip Belize: Damn exhilarating to jump

–This can lead to….pushing your comfort level–being uncomfortable is one of best ways to grow and feel competent and confident! The world can really open up when you realize you can figure it out and get along in a completely different world.

Recent guests dancing to Garifuna drumming

–The expansion in your brain that happens when not knowing exactly what to expect—-from a restaurant, store, excursion, driving etc. I don’t know about the rest of the US, but I notice that we tend to do a LOT of the same experiences over and over again (chain restaurants, amusement parks, predictable activities.) When you find yourself, say, hiking in a jaguar preserve in the dark, tubing through the jungle, climbing a Mayan ruin, tasting something totally unfamiliar at a street stand….with no frame of reference….sometimes one starts to think for themselves about what is enjoyable for THEM instead of following the recipe we grow up with.

Getting out of a river through the jungle, at midnight.
Remax Vip Belize: River through the jungle

–Can I repeat this…..the same old chains and stores and predictable experience GETS OLD and mind numbing!

Remax Vip Belize: Wings H Ermit Crabs

–It is refreshing and exhilarating to do something new….do you remember even eating the last Applebees or TGI Fridays dinner? You’ll remember eating at a roadside stand, served Gibnut (a kind of rat.) from a lovely Mayan woman!

Note: I would not eat this.
Remax Vip Belize: Would not eat this

–Something you can’t buy….smiling and connecting to someone totally different than you… makes you feel better about the world!

Remax Vip Belize: Smiling and connecting to someone

–You learn more about history and geography, in the most memorable ways, by traveling then by any sort of school or reading!! (IMHO.)

–You certainly get a sense of how privileged we are after visiting less well off places—we are just swathed in comfort and safety. Why leave it? You can’t buy being more worldly and having a greater perspective, and how this helps us become more wise.

Remax Vip Belize: History and Geography

–One of my personal favorites….instead of Busch gardens or Disney, you can see real historic treasures like the Blue Hole, Mayan ruins, the coral reef, see the way people actually do live in one room houses on stilts, see the actual banana farmers working, walk through a real jungle, etc.

Remax Vip Belize: Blue Hole, Mayan

–There is something really priceless about being less scared of things, including feeling lost/stupid/incompetent, like everyone does the first time they do something!

–When somebody says whats new….what a great conversation starter!! You can have a reason to talk about awesome places you are thinking of going and get great ideas from other people doing the same thing. People might actually WANT to see your vacation photos!!

Remax Vip Belize: Canada's Wonderland

–I have LOVED my vacation here, and especially connecting with people I care about. BUT……everything I can do in Florida I can do in Cleveland…it is warmer, salt water, etc, but the feel is the same.***

Remax Vip Belize: Loved my vacation

***Note. I have also LOVED having first world conveniences….I have taken full advantage of all of them…..I AM very comfortable and I am loving it!!! I am appreciating the way I can go on autopilot a bit here…I just don’t want to make a habit of it 🙂
